If you’re convicted of DUI in Illinois, you may be able to get a monitoring device driving permit, or MDDP. This guide explains.
What is an MDDP After a Drunk Driving Conviction?
Not everyone convicted of DUI in Skokie, Chicago, Rolling Meadows or elsewhere in Illinois is eligible for a monitoring device driving permit. In fact, it’s only available to first-time DUI offenders, and only under some circumstances.
An MDDP allows you to drive as long as you have a breath alcohol ignition interlock device, or BAIID, installed on the vehicle you’re driving. You can’t drive a car without a BAIID installed on this type of permit. This permit allows you to drive 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
In order to qualify for an MDDP:
- You may not have received a previous statutory summary suspension in the past five years
- You may not have been previously convicted of DUI or assigned court supervision for DUI in Illinois in the past five years
- You may not have been convicted of DUI in another state within the past five years
- Your DUI offense must not have resulted in great bodily harm or death to another person
- You cannot have been previously convicted of reckless homicide or aggravated DUI that resulted in a death
- You must be over the age of 18
Again, you can only drive a car that has a BAIID installed. You must install a BAIID at your own expense.
Note: You are not eligible for an MDDP if your license is suspended for refusing to take a field sobriety test.
Can People With CDLs Get an MDDP?
You can get an MDDP if you have a commercial driver’s license, but you can’t use it to drive any commercial motor vehicle. You can only use it to drive your personal vehicle with a BAIID installed.

Is There an Alternative to an MDDP?
The monitoring device driving permit is only an option for some people convicted of DUI. It’s not an option for everyone. The only way to avoid getting one is to avoid driving during the time your license is supposed to be suspended.
